Power steering on 89 Dodge van…works 90% only..why ?

when I turn into a parking lot..it seems like the pump cuts out. anyone think its the pump ? I did adjust the steering gear box afew months back....could that be a factor ? 10 points for the best answer. Thanx

  1. Les says:

Sounds like the pump to me but then it could be anything associated with the pump… these are:

    1. Belt
    2. fluid
    3. air entrainment
    4. engine rpm

    1. The belt drives the pump… be sure the tension is set correctly.
    2. Fluid level needs to be checked. The pump should have a reservoir nearby… most have a push-on red cap. There are max and min marks on the reservoir.
    3. Air in the system makes the pump act sporadically but it also makes a lot of noise… if things are quiet your system is probably solid which is good. Flushing the system and adding new hydraulic fluid certainly can’t hurt. If you replace the pump, I suggest you flush the system as well.

    4. Engine rpm is probably no more than idle speed when pulling into a parking lot and might not be high enough to drive a failing power steering pump. Raising the idle to 1000 rpm instead of 750 could get you by until the pump is replaced.

All the hydraulics feeds the steering rack so don’t discount it though it is highly unlikely it is causing your problem.

    Good luck!
